Want to apply to a university in Spain?

If you are considering studying at a Spanish university, you should know that to access any degree program, you first need to take an entrance exam.

Want to strengthen your Spanish before applying? Our Gap Year Program gives you the time, language skills and international experience to prepare confidently for university life in Spain.

“What can I do if I am a foreign student and want to study for a university degree in Spain?”

If you haven’t completed secondary school in Spain but want to pursue your degree here, you must take the PCE (Pruebas de Competencia Específica). These exams are key to university admission.

The Prueba de Competencias Específicas consists of a maximum of six exams, but it is recommended to take at least four. You can choose from a wide variety of subjects. There are four main PCE pathways, which we summarize below:

  • Voluntary PCE – For students from countries with agreements, requiring two specific subjects with a 0.2 weighting.

  • PCE Bachillerato Modality – Requires four subjects: one general, one general from a modality, and two specific subjects.

  • PCE Libre – You take four subjects, two of which must have a 0.2 weighting.

  • PCE (PAU) – In this pathway, you must take six subjects: three general, one mandatory from a modality, and two specific subjects.

If your educational system is not Spanish-speaking, the documents you submit to homologate your Baccalaureate diploma in Spain must be accompanied by an official translation into Spanish. Admission requirements and minimum scores vary by university and degree, so it is important to check the specific requirements of each institution before applying.

Many public and private universities across Spain accept PCE exams as part of their admission process for international students.

However, each university establishes its own admission criteria, required subjects, and weighting system depending on the degree programme.

Yes. International students can apply for Medicine and other highly competitive degrees in Spain. Because these programmes usually require high admission scores, many students prepare carefully for the PCE exams and strengthen their Spanish language skills before applying.

The exact calculation may vary depending on your educational system and chosen degree.

The required Spanish level depends on the university and the degree programme. Many universities recommend or require at least a B2 level for programmes taught in Spanish, although some courses may have different language requirements or be offered in English.

The ideal preparation time depends on your academic background, the subjects you choose, and your target university.

Many students begin preparing several months before the examination period to review the syllabus, improve their confidence, and maximise their admission score.

The best subjects depend on the university degree you want to study. Each university may assign different weightings to specific subjects, so choosing the right combination is an important part of the admission strategy.

Yes. AIP helps students understand the admission requirements for their chosen degree and provides guidance on selecting the most appropriate PCE subjects based on their academic goals and university plans.

Once you receive your PCE results and complete the UNEDasiss evaluation, you can use your academic documentation to apply for admission to Spanish universities.

The next steps depend on the university’s admission calendar and the degree programme you have selected.

Toggle ContentStudents from countries outside the European Union may need a student visa depending on the length of their stay and the type of programme they plan to attend. Visa requirements vary by nationality, so applicants should always check the latest information provided by the relevant Spanish embassy or consulate before making travel arrangements.

Spain attracts international students because of its internationally recognised universities, affordable living costs compared with many other European countries, rich cultural heritage, and excellent quality of life.

Combining Spanish language learning with PCE preparation helps students build both the academic knowledge and communication skills needed for university life in Spain.

Improving your Spanish while preparing for the entrance exams can make lectures, assignments, and everyday life at university much easier and increase your confidence from the very beginning.
